NINE TEAMS REMAIN, BUT HOW MANY DO WE STILL LIKE?
In the last episode, the teams travelled from the Pit Stop at Casa del Pueblo in Uruguay to the Pit Stop at La Porteña where all teams had a mandatory 12-hour rest period. Brandon and Nicole led the teams. Charla and Mirna, despite having almost missed the ferry to Colonial del Sacramento, finished close behind in second place. And although Jim and Marsha may have been deceived by the bowling moms about exchanging currency, they still managed to finish a respectable third. Chip and Kami had a showdown when they fought over a taxi. And finally, Alison and Donny turned on each other, leading to problems with the Detour, and transportation difficulties, each of which contributed to their elimination from the Race. Nine teams remain. Who will be eliminated tonight? Can't you just hear Phil's lovely Kiwi voice uttering those words and piquing our interest on an otherwise uneventful Tuesday night?
MIRNA IS NOT AS SHOCKED AS CHARLA
Brandon and Nicole leave first at 11:50PM. It must be hard starting out your travels at this time of night. But such is the nature of the Race Around the World. Brandon reads the next clue: "Teams must now drive over 60 miles (97 km) to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. There, they must find the domestic airport, and fly 1000 miles (1610 km) to San Carlos de Bariloche, a village at the base of the Andes Mountains. They must then drive into the village to find the Mayor who will give them their next clue."

We get our next clue about the future of Brandon and Nicole from the leading couple themselves — Nicole says that even thought they've been dating for more than a year, it has been by long distance, and they are still learning a lot about each other. Uh, yeah, like which hair gel goes best with which conditioner? C'mon people, they're so called models and therefore must be mocked. Brandon tells us that the Race is his opportunity to find out whether Niki and he are "meant to be.” Dunh. Dunh-dunh-dunnnh! Well, sure Brandon, a year together under the blinding glare of the media is one sure-fire way to test your relationship. Forget about that normal courtship that everyday North Americans have to go through.
Charla and Mirna leave one minute later at 11:51PM. Charla says that she and Mirna are working well together, even though they are yelling at each other a lot, because as Charla puts it "in the end they are always there for each other." Well they better be because if they're not, I'd hate to hear how much yelling they could do on their own. Mirna says that she and Charla and she have formed an alliance with Brandon and Nicole. “They’re God-fearing people just like we are,” Mirna tells us. “We hope they stick to their words.” Foreshadowing alert?
Nicole gets their car stuck in a mud hole, and Charla and Mirna stop to help them out. The car is pretty badly stuck, but Brandon says that they are getting help, and then exclaims, "Oh shoot!" as his foot sinks into mud. Brandon, please try to control yourself. A little mud never hurt anybody. There’s no need to curse. Although as Mark Twain once said, “under certain circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer.”
A friendly farmer pulls their car out with a tractor, and Charla and Mirna make their way through the mud hole and back to their own vehicle. Charla grabs the fence at the roadside and then shakes her hand from shock. "I just got electrocuted!" But she is okay. Charla already seems to be fully charged every time we see her. She’s a one-woman racing machine. Mirna says that they had to makes sure their friends were okay and that they would hope that somebody would care enough about them to help them too. My, my, the editors are doing a good job aren’t they?
Jim and Marsha are the next to depart at 12:21AM. They make it through the mud hole without incident. Charla and Mirna take a wrong turn and Brandon convinces Nicole to drive on, and that "they can't slow down too much — they've got teams on their back.” So much for the alliance and sticking to your words I guess. Mirna proclaims that "now they're lost 'cause they trusted somebody.” Oh Mirna! We all put our trust in the wrong people sometimes! Mirna, have you ever put your trust in, oh, I don’t know, say, a map? Also, when you’re following someone, it helps if you remember the part where you’re supposed to follow them.
The bowling moms leave in fourth position at 12:28AM, and Bob and Joyce leave right behind them at 12:31AM. The moms have made an agreement with Bob and Joyce that if they can help each other out, they will. This alliance doesn’t sound as well intentioned as the cousins’, so maybe it has a chance of working out better.
Linda plows through the mud hole shouting "You forgot my middle name's Mario Andretti!" Okay, Linda, we'll remind CBS to make the cheque payable to "Linda Mario Andretti Ruiz.” Karen says that Linda is vivacious, that the fun that she has is contagious. Gee, this makes me feel courageous, audacious, and even loquacious … but perhaps I’m just trying to be outrageous. Ahem. Anyway, Karen says that Linda helps her break out of her shell. It seems to be true — the moms always seem to be laughing and cracking wise.
Meanwhile, Charla and Mirna have stopped at a gas station to ask for directions to the domestic airport, but don't have much luck and Mirna yells at Charla to "get in the car!"They're working so well together.
Brandon and Nicole, on the other hand, have found the airport. Maybe now they'll go back to help Charla and Mirna find it. Or, uh, maybe not.
Colin and Christie leave at 12:32AM. Christie says that they don't like to be last. Colin says that when he looks around at the competition, he is confident that they are going to be the team that wins. They quickly catch up with Bob and Joyce and the moms.
The moms don't seem to know where they are going, so Bob and Joyce motion to them to pull over. Colin and Christie stop too; they want to work with the other two teams. The moms want Colin and Christie to lead. Colin tells us that part of his strategy is to help other teams “in the beginning, so that when it comes time to get that piece of information that they have,” he is able to get it. Hey, wait a minute. It sounds like Colin might have seen some unscripted dramas on TV before he entered this Race ... is that a copy of The Amazing Race for Dummies I see in the dash of this car?
The brothers are the seventh team to depart, at 12:41AM. Lance says that "Marshall and I are not bodybuilder-type physiques" and that "certainly the shape you're in will have an effect on how you'll play the game.” Their goal, as he puts it, is to try and play the game "round by round" and still be there at the end each time. I get it, Lance. Another day, another 50 cents. Just another day on The Amazing Race. Ho-hum. Note to future Racers who do have bodybuilder-type physiques: Do not attempt this strategy – it will not work for you.
The alliance of three teams finds the airport. Charla and Mirna are still lost. They stop again to ask for directions. This time however, they not only find a local who knows where the domestic airport is, but one who can lead them there in his car.
The brothers get a flat tire. They search the trunk for something to help them fix it. It seems that they have never changed a flat tire before, and had to figure out how to do it on the spot.
Chip and Kim leave at 1:08AM. Kim says that she and Chip have “decided there’s no such thing as an alliance. From this point forward, we just trust each other.” Maybe they’ve been observing Brandon and Nicole from a distance and can see the folly of an “alliance.” It’s nice that someone is finally making sense! We need more ruthlessness! More backstabbing! More mud holes! More disco foam! Wait … let’s move on.
Last to depart are twins Kami and Karli at 1:13AM. They don't like being dead last and as Kami tells us, they "need to stay focused.” Or is it Karli that tells us this? I guess I am having a hard time focusing myself.
Returning to the brothers, we find out that they figure they have only lost 13 minutes changing the flat tire. Marshall jokes, "who said two fat Jewish guys couldn't change a tire?" Great. Now we have a pit crew and Ms. Mario Andretti. Is it any wonder Formula One is so popular?
Charla and Mirna reach the airport. They see Brandon and Nicole and confront them to ask what happened on the road. Brandon tells them that they waited for them. Mirna's not buying it though. Brandon and Nicole say that they will book tickets for all four of them. Mirna seems to want to see if they'll come through before deciding if she will give them another chance. Brandon is beginning to look a little more like Pinocchio every time we see him.
ILL WINDS BLOW NO GOOD ... UNLESS THEY’RE SOUTHERN WINDS
We see Kami … er Karli … er whoever … travelling in their taxi say that she and Chip had a falling out in the last leg of the Race. In another taxi, we hear Chip laugh and say that his nickname for the twins is “The Bad Seeds,” and that “they seem like these little cute, innocent, little things but they will chop your head off.” Uh, Chip, don’t quit your day job okay? You know, the one where you and Kim spend 23 hours together? I mean how could seeds chop your head off? Wouldn’t it be better to refer to them as “The Bad Axe Women” or the “The Bad Executioners”? This Race is so confusing.
The brothers reach the airport and realize that everyone will have caught up to each other and have to wait for the Aerolineas Argentinas 10:30AM flight. They ask around about other airlines, and find out about a Southern Winds flight at 9:40AM. Brandon and Nicole and Charla and Mirna see them trying to buy tickets, and snoop around. Marshall tells them that the Southern Winds ticket agent isn’t on until 5:30AM. Marshall does find out though that there are seats available on the 9:40AM flight. To get them, the airline representative instructs him to stand in the queue at another counter. Marshall tells Lance to go stand there to hold a place at the front of the line, but an eavesdropping Charla beats Lance to it. Marshall, seeing that they have been outplayed, wants to know if Charla and Mirna are buying tickets for anyone else. Mirna says no, but urges Nicole, who is lurking nearby, not to reveal anything to the brothers. Brandon looks like his conscience is bothering him again, and seems unsure of what exactly to say. Brandon, it was Mark Twain’s cousin who once said, “It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a backstabber than to open it and remove all doubt.”
Lance says he hates Mirna “so much, he can’t even begin to explain it,” and “when I have the opportunity … you watch, I will get even.” You show her, Lance … you should butt in front of her at the Pit Stop and hug Phil just before she does! If nothing else, this manoeuvring and posturing reminds us that in the Race, you always have to be on your toes … especially when flights are involved.
Chip and Kim and the twins reach the airport at the same time. Jim and Marsha are first in line for tickets on Aerolineas Argentinas, but there is only one seat on the 9:10AM flight. Although Marsha reminds us that she and her dad have to fly together, she buys the single ticket anyway, in the hopes that her dad can get on flying standby. To be sure though, she also buys tickets on the 10:30AM flight. Nicole asks Marsha if she can buy tickets for her and Brandon as well, and since Marsha is still at the front of the line, she agrees. Mirna is not impressed, and confronts Nicole to ask her if Marsha is buying tickets for her. Nicole denies it, but it is obvious that Marsha is in fact buying the tickets when she turns to tell Brandon, “we put you on the 10:30 flight.” Brandon and Nicole are the King and Queen of Alliances! Perhaps they know the finer points of hypnosis? In any event, they always seem to be on the winning end …
Charla later says that, “Brandon and Nicole broke our trust,” and that they were going to another counter to “only worry about themselves.” Mirna says that if you give people the chance, they’ll squash you like a bug.” Oh Mirna! Good idea! Here’s hoping that Squash and Slosh are the two choices in a future Detour!
The moms get tickets for the 10:30AM flight, and get tickets for Bob and Joyce too. Hey, that alliance worked! As Mark Twain’s second cousin, twice-removed once said, “the universal brotherhood of airline ticket buyers is our most precious possession.”
Colin and Christie also get tickets for the 10:30AM flight, as do Chip and Kim. The twins are too late – Chip and Kim have purchased the last tickets on the 10:30 flight, so Twin A asks if they can be put on the waiting list.
Meanwhile, the brothers get tickets on the 9:40AM flight. Brandon is all smiles – he and Nicole have tickets for the 10:30AM Aerolineas Argentinas flight and standby tickets on both of the earlier flights. Talk about covering all your bases! Nicole is looking a little frazzled. She pleaded with the ticket agent to get them on the 9:10AM flight to no avail. She says that she “is on an emotional roller coaster,” so she asks “the Lord to calm her down, and put her mind back where it should be.”
At this point of the episode, I have to say I’m bored. I mean we’re halfway through and most of it has been about buying tickets? I guess the editors need to develop the “characters” and we need to see some dynamics of the relationships between Racers, but wouldn’t it be more interesting to see the teams while they are resting at the Pit Stop once in a while? Maybe not. Something is telling me, though, that they must have been hard pressed to pick something good out of the hours and hours of footage that they must have had.
Anyway, Colin and Christie get standby tickets on the 9:10AM flight, although Colin tells Christie to “stop talking” because he thinks she is stressing out the ticket agents.
Charla and Mirna try to get on the 9:10AM flight, as well, and Charla tells the ticket agent that she has to get to “the doctoro,” playing the “people like to help me because of my size” card once again. Worse than that, she’s inventing words that might only qualify as “Spanglish.” The agent agrees to give them priority on the waiting list.
Jim is confused. He thinks that he and Marsha have confirmed tickets for the 10:30AM flight, but they learn that while Marsha is confirmed on the 9:10AM flight, only he is confirmed on the 10:30AM flight. Because of their misunderstanding, both tickets will be useless, because the Race rules state that they have to fly together. A little frantic, Marsha quickly tries to get on the waiting list for the 10:30AM flight, but is told by the airline representative that she only has about a 10% chance of making the flight.
It’s the moment of truth, and the 9:10AM flight is getting ready for takeoff. At the standby counter, Colin and Christie and Charla and Mirna are successful in getting on the flight. Brandon and Nicole successfully get on the 9:40AM flight. Most of the remaining teams are stuck with the 10:30AM flight. However, neither Jim and Marsha, nor Kami and Karli, are assured spots on that flight. In the end, everyone remaining boards the 10:30AM flight, except Jim and Marsha. They are stuck. Again, we see that being first in line at the ticket counter does not always translate into success. However, they do manage to get a ticket on a Southern Winds flight at 11:30AM. They’re not out of it yet.
CHARLA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
Colin and Christie are the first to leave the airport after arriving in San Carlos de Bariloche. They jump into their jeep and start driving towards the centre of town to find the Mayor’s office. They quickly find the Mayor and receive their next clue. The teams must now make their way to the del Turista chocolate factory in the town. The streets of San Carlos de Bariloche are lined with chocolate stores, but the factory is a few blocks away.
Charla and Mirna arrive at the Mayor’s office just as Colin and Christie are leaving. The visit to the chocolate factory turns out to be a Roadblock. Phil explains that one team member must now overindulge in the most popular food in San Carlos de Bariloche – chocolate. To receive their next clue, team members must bite into chocolates until they find one filled with a white centre. The only problem is that there are only 20 chocolates with white centres on a table of nearly 11,000 of them! Colin starts eating.
Charla, in best imitation of Lucille Ball starts biting into chocolates. “I’m gonna throw up,” she shouts. However, she finds a white centre quickly, and receives the next clue from the chocolate “master.” Teams must now drive nearly 12 miles (19.3 km) to Villa Catedral, a ski village where they must take a gondola to the top of the mountain to search for their next clue.
Colin, his mouth filled with chocolates, knocks on the glass and demands that Christie help him by looking for white centres as he ploughs through the chocolates. Christie tells us that “Colin has a short fuse,” and that she “will give him a little leeway because he gets frustrated.” “Cream! Cream! Was that cream?” she yells as chocolates fall from Colin’s mouth onto the floor. “No!” Colin shouts, apparently getting frustrated with her again.
The second flight arrives in San Carlos de Bariloche. Brandon and Nicole are travelling with the brothers, but lose them at a red light. Nicole says “we’re worried that Brandon and I really are screwing people over.” But their guilt does not appear to be a great enough motivator to maintain their so called alliances. And as Mark Twain’s nephew was fond of saying, “No Racer that has ever lived has done a thing to please God primarily. It was done to please himself, then God next.”
Meanwhile, Mirna, although she is in the lead, is having trouble manoeuvring the jeep out of a parking space. So much so that she bumps the car behind her and sets off its alarm. As she starts out for Villa Catedral, we hear Marshall yell out “bitch!” at her as the brothers, trailing, make their way to the chocolate factory. Marshall really wants to get back at Mirna for screwing him out of those plane tickets. Mirna says that she is “disgusted at the people they have to deal with.”
THE RACE IS LIKE A FACTORY OF CHOCOLATES, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO GET
Colin finds a white centre. Bob and Joyce are closing in on the Roadblock. Brandon finds a white centre too, and gleefully tells the master, “Gracias caballero!” I can only think that Brandon must have learned that one from watching Sergio Leone films on cable. Colin and Christie and Brandon and Nicole are on to find their next clue. The brothers arrive at the chocolate factory, and Marshall settles in for what turns out to be a long Road Block for his team. Lance tells Marshall, “You’re doing fine, no one else is here even.” But Bob and Joyce arrive and Joyce starts in on the chocolates. Marshall is having a difficult time finding a white centre, but Joyce finds one quickly and she and Bob race on. Marshall however, can’t believe his bad luck and plods on grudgingly.
The third flight has arrived, and we see both the moms and the twins arrive at del Turista. The twins find a white centre quickly. Chip and Kim arrive at the chocolate factory and when Chip sees the twins leaving, he shouts, “Go twins go!” Either Kami or Karli mutters, “Yeah, right.”
We see more overindulgence. Marshall, who still hasn’t found a white centre, is getting very frustrated. And he becomes even more frustrated as he watches Linda, and then Chip, find a white centre.
Lance laughingly jokes to his brother, “You do know what the colour white is, right?” Finally, Marshall catches his break, and the brothers are off to Villa Catedral behind every other team save for Jim and Marsha, who at last reach San Carlos de Bariloche on their later flight. They haven’t given up yet. They hire a taxi at the airport, not to drive them, but to lead them to San Carlos de Bariloche. It’s a smart move and one that could save them a lot of time. They reach the village, find the Mayor, and are rapidly on their way to chocolaty goodness. Jim starts eating and finds a white centre, although of course it’s difficult to tell how long it took him, thanks to the editing. They then pay a local to drive ahead of them to the villa.
Colin and Christie, and Charla and Mirna, take the gondola up the mountain together, just as Brandon and Nicole arrive. Colin races to the clue box at the top of the mountain saying, “I’m so serious, we have to beat the midget.” Colin must have that famous saying from Mark Twain’s grandmother inside his wallet, “I have found out that there ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.”
So far, Charla and Mirna haven’t been getting all that much respect from the other teams, but then again, maybe she hasn’t earned it either. What’s more, the brothers (as well as some of the other teams) have referred to the cousins as “Mirna and Schmirna,” evidently because they have a hard time learning people’s names. I wonder if that affects their business back at their restaurant. And now Colin is calling Charla “the midget,” as Donny did back in the first episode.
Most of the other teams arrive, and Phil explains that the Racers must face a Detour. In this Detour, teams must choose between “Smooth Sailing” and “Rough Riding.” Smooth Sailing involved paragliding in tandem with an instructor down the mountainside – a quick and exciting descent. Rough Riding, however, involves biking down the mountain, over 6 miles (9.7 km) of rough trails. After completing the Detour, the teams must make their way to the third Pit Stop, 14 miles (22.5 km) away. It’s an unnamed island jutting out from the water in Bahia Lopez, a small bay outside of Bariloche.
All of the teams on the mountain elect to paraglide rather than ride bikes. Mirna is crying because, she says, she “was so scared,” but Charla is quickly in the air with a smile on her face. I’m not sure if Mirna is really scared of all the things she says she is, but she is pretty upset here, and I tend to believe that her fear here is real.

“Oh yes!” cries Joyce as she learns that paragliding is an option. “I’ve always wanted to do this!” It’s great that Joyce has been so enthusiastic about everything that the Race has to offer. If I was on this show, I would want to travel with someone like her. And remember, as Bob told us in Episode 2, she’s got muscles too!
The brothers appear to be lost, which is just the kind of break that Marsha is hoping for. Meanwhile, Colin and Christie drive their jeep in search of the Pit Stop. Charla does a cartwheel on her way to her jeep. Brandon and Nicole race to their jeep. One twin says to the other that she had to pretend that she was sick while she was paragliding so that her instructor would land more quickly. Nothing like having fun on the run in the Race Around the World.
Linda says that she is very leery about the safety of paragliding. She is scared, and gets into the air only after one of the paragliding team yanks her and her instructor to help them off the mountain. The views of the Andes Mountains from the air are spectacular. Linda is proud of herself because paragliding is “one of the craziest things” that she has ever done. No way Linda! — crazier than visiting the Foam Club? Just kidding, truthfully, way to go Linda, paragliding in Patagonia is a far tougher achievement than making a 7-10 split at a bowling alley.
It’s getting tense as Jim and Marsha arrive at Villa Catedral, only to see many of the other teams paragliding down the mountainside. What’s worse is that they are still a gondola ride behind the brothers, who have somehow already found the village. Jim says ‘We’re not quitting until it’s over.” Alright Jim, keep it up. Mirna checks her hair after being in the air, remembering that every time they meet up with Phil, they seem to look terribly dishevelled. It’s okay Mirna, maybe you can still steal another hug.
Brandon remarks on the drive to the Pit Stop, “We make a good team, you know. We’re so competitive, we just want to win.” Wait a minute, Chip called the twins competitive earlier in the episode, and he did not mean it as a compliment! Note to viewers: If another team is “competitive,” it’s a very bad thing. If your team is competitive, you are special, and you will win the Race because of this unique quality.
Colin and Christie arrive at Bahia Lopez, and spot Phil on “the little island.” Christie giggles as they splash through the shallow water, and Colin says, “It feels good!” They finish in first place with a kiss for each other. Christie later remarks, “We have now really started to learn exactly how this game needs to be played.” Charla and Mirna are not far behind, splashing through the water to finish second. Mirna gets to hug Phil once again, despite her tousled hair. Maybe Mirna’s primary motivation for being so competitive is simply the chance to hug Phil! Brandon carries Nicole on his back to a third place finish. They also kiss each other before Nicole remarks happily, “We’re doing good!”
Cut to Marshall and Lance getting lost again, but this time it is on their way to Bahia Lopez. Or maybe that is just some creative editing to make us think Jim and Marsha still have a chance.
Phil welcomes Bob and Joyce, and tells them that they have finished fourth. Joyce lets out a whoop as she raises Bob’s arm in the air.
Kami and Karli think they have to swim to the island, and plunge in without hesitation. Upon reaching the Philimination mat, Phil laughingly tells them “everyone else just walked across the shallow water there.” Still, the twins don’t seem to mind, and maybe they are finding their groove with their fifth place finish.
Linda and Karen arrive and Linda says “they’ll take” their sixth place finish. Chip and Kim arrive in seventh place and remain optimistic despite having been bested by the moms and some of the other teams. “Moved up a notch,” Chip says, “… moving up slowly but surely.”
The brothers arrive next. In the water, Marshall says, “Lance, my knee is killing me,” and Lance gives him a hand up onto the mat. Phil tells them that they have secured the eighth spot and the chance to keep racing. Lance exclaims “What up! What up!” They may have made a few wrong turns, but they got to where they had to when it counted.
Finally, Jim and Marsha arrive. Phil tells them that they are the last team to arrive, and that they have been eliminated from the Race. Phil asks Marsha, “Are you proud of your dad?”
Marsha says, “It took a lot of guts to keep going, to try to keep up with me, to try not to let me down, which I know he was worried about. And he didn’t.”
Jim is a little choked and says, “Anything I thought I could teach her ... she already knew … I’m so proud of her I can’t put it into words.” Hey Jim, you got me a little choked up there too! Jim, you and Marsha may not have been an Army of Two, but you worked well together as partners for the most part, and I was sorry to see you go. And so another team that I liked and was rooting for has been eliminated. That’s okay, after four seasons I’m getting used to it! “I can’t wait to see which of the few remaining teams I like will be eliminated next week!” In the next episode, Colin and Christie square off against Charla and Mirna in Russia, and the brothers push each other a little too far. Others find out that caviar is not all it’s cracked up to be. Time to split this continent already! This is a Race Around the World!

Meanwhile, Charla and Mirna have stopped at a gas station to ask for directions to the domestic airport, but don't have much luck and Mirna yells at Charla to "get in the car!"
